Study: Happy People Buy Time Instead Of Stuff

They say money can’t buy you love — but can it buy happiness? That’s up for debate, but a new study says that using your funds to purchase time — something we all wish we had more of — can lead to increased happiness.

Despite the fact that incomes are rising these days, people can get stressed out when they feel like they don’t have enough time, notes a team of researcher from the University of British Columbia and Harvard Business School in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, but they found that people who spend their money on time-saving services report “greater life satisfaction.”

For example, paying someone else to do household chores like cleaning and cooking, or pick up your dry-cleaning.

While one may think that having a lot of money could offer a way out of the “time famine” of modern life, as researchers put it, some evidence suggests that the wealthy folk often spend time engaging in stressful activities, like shopping or commuting.

“Feelings of time stress are in turn linked to lower well-being, including reduced happiness, increased anxiety, and insomnia,” researchers note, adding that time stress is also a factor in underlying rising rates of obesity: People who don’t have time say that’s the reason they don’t eat healthy foods or exercise regularly.

Survey Says

Researchers surveyed more than 6,000 people from the United States, Denmark, Canada, and the Netherlands. In all samples, respondents completed two questions about whether — and how much — money they spent each month to increase their free time by paying someone else to complete unenjoyable daily tasks.

Respondents also rated their satisfaction with life, and reported their annual household income, the number of hours they work each week, age, marital status, and the number of children living at home.

Across several samples — including adults from the U.S., Canada, Denmark, and a bunch of Dutch millionaires — buying time was linked to greater life satisfaction.

The results held for a wide range of demographics, as well as for the amount that respondents spent on groceries and material and experiential purchases each month.

“These results were not moderated by income, suggesting that people from various socioeconomic backgrounds benefit from making time-saving purchases,” researchers find.

Researchers also conducted a field study in which 60 adults were randomly assigned to spend $40 on a time saving purchase on one weekend, and $40 on a material purchase on another weekend. Results showed that people felt happier when they spent money on a time saving purchase than on a material purchase.

“People who hire a housecleaner or pay the kid next door to mow the lawn might feel like they’re being lazy,” said study lead author Ashley Whillans, assistant professor at Harvard Business School. “But our results suggest that buying time has similar benefits for happiness as having more money.”

Coke Zero Gets New Recipe, Changes Name To ‘Coke Zero Sugar’

Coca-Cola Zero — the drink of choice for people who want the low-calories of Diet Coke and something that tastes vaguely like Coke, but not quite — is getting an overhaul, with Coca-Cola announcing that the diet soda is being reformulated and re-introduced with the new branding of Coke Zero Sugar.

The beverage giant isn’t saying exactly what it did to tweak the recipe, but claims that Coke Zero Sugar will taste even more like Coca-Cola but will still have no sugar or calories. The new product will start hitting U.S. stores in August, so if you want to hoard the existing formula of the drink, you might want to do so now.

Coca-Cola introduced the Zero line of products as an alternative to existing diet drinks that made significant sacrifices to taste in order to reach the no-calorie goal. The Zero drinks were seen by some fans as a huge improvement, allowing soda fans to get something closer to (but not quite) Coke without the calories.

The decision to rebrand the product as Coke Zero Sugar appears to be a response to decreasing consumer demand for sugary beverages, making it clear in the name of the drink that it contains no sugar.

Not surprisingly, fans of Coke Zero are… not thrilled.

Investigation Shows Chipotle Norovirus Outbreak Probably Caused By Sick Employee

After its food safety crisis in 2015 and 2016, Chipotle implemented new procedures, including everything from blanching produce to shutting down and sanitizing a restaurant if anyone, employee or customer, vomits inside. The problem, it turns out, is that it doesn’t matter how good your protocols are if stores don’t actually follow them.

Or, as Chipotle’s founder and CEO Steve Ells put it during the company’s quarterly conference call with investors, “We know that our procedures work when executed properly, but compliance in each restaurant is essential.”

Another outbreak

The outbreak of norovirus in a Virginia restaurant led to more bad publicity just as Chipotle seemed to have recovered from the food safety crisis, which began on Halloween in 2015. After two cases of the disease were confirmed by laboratory testing out of at least 135 people who may have been affected, Chipotle’s leaders explained how another outbreak happened.

Working while sick, probably

“We conducted a thorough investigation and it revealed that our leadership there didn’t strictly adhere to our company protocols,” CEO Ells said in response to an analyst’s question during yesterday’s quarterly earnings call.

Specifically, Ells said, the company believes that an employee was working while sick, and spread the highly contagious norovirus to customers while, say, preparing food or handling money.

Norovirus is the scourge of cruise ships, hospitals, nursing homes, and restaurants, because it spreads so easily and the virus itself is difficult to kill. Yet at least this reassures Chipotle customers that the problem wasn’t in the food itself, and is unlikely to turn up in other restaurants, as the still-mysterious E. coli outbreak did.

About those protocols…

CNBC spoke to current front-line Chipotle employees who weren’t identified for obvious reasons, who told the network that their managers don’t follow the new sick leave policy, and other parts of the new food safety procedures are only observed when a food safety auditor is present.

The policy is supposed to be that employees get paid sick leave so they aren’t financially incentivized to work while sick, especially if they have signs of a possible foodborne illness like a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea. On the ground, this policy reportedly isn’t being observed.

“My boss has told me that I have no option but to come in tomorrow, and it’s been heavily implied that my job will be in jeopardy if I don’t come in,” one purported worker posted on Reddit. He later told CNBC, “I’ve since had one of my managers tell us that they only abide by the sick policy about 40 percent of the time.”

Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold told Consumerist that if employees worked sick, that’s a violation of the company’s policies, which include an employee wellness screening, meant to screen them for potentially contagious illnesses. “If they are symptomatic, they are excused from work and held out until they are feeling better,” he explained. “That is the kind of thing our policies cover, and the allegations in the CNBC story would represent very clear violations to those policies.”

First Attempt At Repeal-Only Of Obamacare Falls Short In Senate

After falling far short of the votes needed to move forward with its sweeping measure to repeal and replace large parts of the Affordable Care Act, the Senate took another vote this afternoon, this time on a bill that simply repeals key aspects of the ACA without including any replacement.

Unlike last night’s vote, which needed to have 60 supporters in order to merit further consideration, the repeal-only measure only needed 50 votes to succeed. However, the GOP was not able to reach that lowered threshold, with seven Republican senators voting against it.

Senators Susan Collins (ME), Lisa Murkowsky (AK), Dean Heller (NV), John McCain (AZ), Lamar Alexander (TN), Shelley Moore Capito (WV), and Rob Portman (OH) were the Republicans who voted no. McCain, Alexander, Capito, and Portman had all voted “yes” last night in support of the repeal-and-replacement bill.

Six GOP senators — Bob Corker (TN), Tom Cotton (AR), Lindsey Graham (SC), Mike Lee (UT), Jerry Moran (KS), and Rand Paul (KY) — who voted against the replacement measure voted for repeal-only, highlighting the Senate’s current difficulties in reaching a consensus on this matter.

The bill — technically introduced as an amendment to the House repeal/replacement legislation that passed earlier this year — was championed by Sen. Paul. The substance of the legislation is largely similar to a bill that Congress passed in late 2015, knowing that it would be (and ultimately was) vetoed by President Obama. It seeks to repeal the most frequently targeted aspects of Obamacare, like the so-called “individual mandate,” which requires that just about everyone has to purchase at least some form of healthcare coverage.

This version of Sen. Paul’s amendment also proposed cutting off federal funding for services like Planned Parenthood because they provide abortions. The Senate is expected to take up a second version of the repeal-only bill that does not include this abortion-related prohibition, though it’s unclear if that will be enough to get the GOP to the 50 votes it needs.

The repeal bill does leave in place aspects of Obamacare that many people like, but which are believed to drive up the price of insurance premiums. These include the ban on plans that charge more (or deny coverage) to customers with pre-existing conditions, and the requirement that adult offspring can remain on their parents’ plan until age 26.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has twice scored plans similar to what was voted on today and both times concluded that this sort of repeal-but-not-replace proposal would leave some 32 million additional Americans without health insurance.

The CBO also projected that, without people being required to have insurance, there would be little to no financial incentive for some coverage providers to continue offering individual insurance policies. After a decade of repeal, the CBO expects that 75% of the U.S. population would live in areas without any insurers offering policies through the individual marketplace.

The Paul bill attempts to deal with those concerns by building in a two-year delay for repeal. In that time, supporters of repeal-only believe that Congress can hash out an adequate replacement.

“My guess is that we will have impetus from the other side to actually begin to negotiate,” said Sen. Paul early on Wednesday morning.

Many Democrats spoke today to call for the GOP to open up this bill to true bipartisan discussion through the committee process, with Sen. Ron Wyden (OR), noting that “Bipartisanship is not about taking the worst of each other’s ideas.”

Sen. Joe Donnelly of Indiana has asked for a vote on his amendment that would send the matter to the Senate Finance Committee for consideration, in the hope that it would reduce some of the proposed cuts to Medicaid. It’s not known yet if the Senate will take up that amendment or how they will vote.

Papaya Lovers, Beware: There’s A Salmonella Outbreak Going Around

If you’ve bought some nice juicy papayas and are preparing to cut them up for your next snack, you’ll want to pay attention to this: There’s a salmonella outbreak linked to a certain brand of papayas — but the company that sells them isn’t sharing that information with customers.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Grande Produce informed the agency that it initiated a limited recall of its Caribeña brand Maradol papayas distributed nationwide from July 7 – July 18, 2017.

But as of Tuesday, the company hasn’t issued a press release notifying consumers about the recall. Therefore, the FDA is warning consumers to avoid all Caribeña brand Maradol papayas.

Salmonella Is Going Around

These papayas have been linked to a recent outbreak of salmonella: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been 47 cases, 12 hospitalizations and one death from 12 states in the Salmonella Kiambu outbreak reported so far.

The states involved are IA, KY, LA, MA, MD, MN, NJ, NY, PA, TX, UT and VA.

CDC is now investigating to obtain additional information, and determine whether or not another recent strain of the illness — Salmonella Thompson — in Maryland is part of this multistate outbreak.

Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment.

What You Should Do

Don’t eat any Caribeña brand Maradol papayas, and if you have any at home, throw them out. The FDA also recommends asking restaurants or retailer whether they use Caribeña brand Maradol papayas and if so, avoid eating those products.

Expect Airport Security Delays As TSA Starts Scanning Tablets Separately From Carry-On Bags

If you’re one of the many air travelers who uses a tablet to play games, watch videos, read, or do work while flying, be warned that your device will soon be subject to the same sort of security screening that has been given to laptop computers for years. And even if you’re not carrying a tablet in your bag, you should probably expect longer waits at airport checkpoints.

The Transportation Security Administration announced today that any carried-on electronic devices that are larger than your typical smartphone will soon have to be pulled out of your bag and placed in separate bins at airport security checkpoints.

The TSA has been testing this process at a handful of airports — including Los Angeles International, Boston’s Logan International, and McCarren International in Las Vegas — and says it will now be rolled out in the coming weeks to all U.S. airports.

The agency says that, as the new screening rolls out, TSA officers will advise travelers on the best way to organize their carry-on items before they get to the X-ray machines.

“Travelers are encouraged to organize their carry-on bags and keep them uncluttered to ease the screening process and keep the lines moving,” advises the TSA. “There are no changes to what travelers can bring through the checkpoint; food and liquid items that comply with the 3-1-1 liquids rule, electronics, and books continue to be allowed in carry-on bags.”

If you’re traveling at some point in the months to come, we’d advise getting to the airport with even more time built in to make it through security — even if you’re not carrying any devices that need to be taken out of your bag and scanned separately. With so many people flying — and with so many tablets, e-readers, and gaming devices to be scanned — it seems inevitable that there will be occasional additional delays as travelers and TSA staff get used to the new process.

Good news for people enrolled in theTSA Pre✓ program: If you’re are using the Pre✓ lanes (which aren’t available at all airports), you won’t be subject to the additional screening on your tablets and other large electronics.

The agency is painting this increased scrutiny as a way of setting an example for other countries. In June, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly announced new screening requirements for 280 foreign airports if they wanted to continue to operate flights to the U.S. without having to face additional restrictions on carry-on electronics.

FTC Awards $25,000 Prize To App Designed To Make Your Stuff’s Security Suck Less

Your stuff may be increasingly “smart,” but the security on it almost certainly isn’t. If something of yours connects to the internet, it can be hacked — leaving your private data vulnerable, and potentially sweeping your stuff into an international criminal botnet. Now, the FTC is awarding a cash prize to a developer who’s designed an app to hopefully help you make your stuff more secure.

The FTC announced the contest back in January.

The name is a mouthful — the Internet of Things Home Inspector Challenge — but the idea’s clear enough. The contest invited developers to create some kind of tool that home consumers (not giant businesses) can use to help protect themselves from the security vulnerabilities in their stuff.

Because as the Internet of Things expands, the poor security baked into most of the things in question is becoming a massive problem, exacerbated by both poor design and human nature.

Why the FTC held the contest

We hear stories about the hackability of some thing or other basically weekly, at this point: cars, firearms, baby monitors, security cameras, printers, Segway scooters, televisions, DVRs — the list of items being remotely accessed, either for crime or just to prove a point that it can be, goes on and on.

Many devices are simply not well-designed, from a security point of view. For example, many devices have terribly basic, universal, or completely absent default passwords on them. Or worse, they’re hard-coded to accept only the password they ship with — or even none at all.

Of course, sometimes the devices themselves are designed pretty well… but we, the users, kind of aren’t. Human nature is a harder problem to solve: very few of us are technical experts; most consumers who buy things now simply expect them to work, and we expect that the companies that sell us these expensive gadgets will have arranged them to work safely.

So then when something critical — like, say, your home router — is already out of date and vulnerable before you even take it out of the box, consumers know neither that they need to update it nor, if they do, how. Extend that to watches, refrigerators, cars, ceiling fans, thermostats, door locks, light bulbs, and more that constantly need some kind of non-automatic update and, well, most people simply won’t do it. They’ll set it and forget it, instead.

That, then, is the problem the FTC challenged developers to take on: Could anyone create a single, easy-to-use tool that consumers could actually use, in the real world, to manage the security of their various stuff?

And the winner is…

Today, the FTC announced that the challenge has a winner: A man named Steve Castle, based in New Hampshire, will claim the Commission’s $25,000 top prize.

The tool Castle designed is IoT Watchdog, a mobile app that, theoretically, would make it a lot easier for low-tech users to identify the high-tech problems in their homes.

Basically, install the app on your phone, and you can scan your home Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networks for connected devices. The app would then tell users which of those connected devices need to be patched, or what common vulnerabilities those devices have and how to fix them.

Acting FTC chair Maureen Ohlhausen congratulated Castle and the runners-up, saying, “Their innovative ideas will help consumers secure their devices and aid the growth of the IoT overall.”

The FTC has a video demo of the winning app, as well as the honorable mention runner-up, on the contest page.

Colorado Makes It Legal To Break Into A Hot Car To Save Kids, Pets

When there’s a living being stuck inside a hot car on a sweltering day, sometimes desperate measures are necessary — helpful bystanders may have to break into that vehicle to save a child left behind, or even a pet. One state has now made these kinds of rescue efforts legal.

Under a new Colorado law [PDF] that goes into effect Aug. 9, people who are “rendering emergency assistance from a locked vehicle” will be “exempt from criminal and civil liability” for any property damage resulting from their forcible entry into that vehicle.

You should never leave a child or at-risk person in a locked car with the windows up, as temperatures can inside can rise quickly. Along with Colorado, 25 other states have laws that protect pets left in parked vehicles, according to a study by Michigan State.

There Are Some Conditions

You can’t just go shattering any window you want at will, however:

• The vehicle cannot be a law enforcement vehicle.

• The at-risk person or animal has to be inside it at the time — and if it is a non-human, the law only applies to cats or dogs. Sorry, livestock. Specifically: Cattle, horses, mules, burros, sheep, poultry, swine, llamas, and goats.

• Anyone breaking in must have a “reasonable belief that the at-risk person or animal is in imminent danger of death or suffering serious bodily injury.” You also have to check first if the car is locked, thus requiring forcible entry.

• Helpers must make a “reasonable effort” to find the owner or operator of the car, while documenting the color, make, model, license plate number, and location.

RELATED: 800 Kids Have Died In Hot Cars: Why Aren’t Alert Systems Standard?

• Good samaritans are required to contact a local law enforcement agency — the fire department, animal contra, or 9-1-1. And if such an authority should show up, you can’t get in their way.

• Don’t use more force than reasonably necessary.

• Afterwards, the person rendering assistance has to remain with the person or animal, close to the vehicle, until law enforcement shows up.

• If you do have to leave the scene before the car’s owner and/or law enforcement arrive, you are required to put a notice on the windshield of the vehicle with your name and contact information and if you took the person or animal you saved somewhere else, where that location is.

You also need to call law enforcement and inform them that you’re leaving the scene, and provide contact information and details on the saved person or animal’s location.

“It was written to make sure there were common-sense steps,” Rep. Lori Saine, R-Dacono, an author of the bill, told the Denver Post. “It was also to protect property owners so that people aren’t just breaking in because they’re angry.”

This tax season, you may remember Consumerist reminding you to file as early as possible, especially if you were expecting a refund or receiving certain tax credits aimed at lower-income Americans. New anti-fraud measures taken by the Internal Revenue Service and better awareness of the problem have apparently helped: The IRS reports that tax refund fraud has decreased.

That doesn’t mean that it’s stopped, but does mean that it’s down 47% over this time last year. By the end of May 2016, 204,000 people had filed reports that someone had stolen their tax refunds, and 297,000 in the same period in 2015. That number was only 97,000 in the first five months of 2017.

“The IRS, state tax agencies and the tax community have worked hard to turn the tide against tax-related identity theft,” IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said in a statement.

One of the measures that the IRS put in place to protect taxpayers’ refunds meant that they received them later than usual, and this had far-reaching and strange effects on the economy, like lower TV sales.

The agency does warn, though, that crooks are now trying other ways to scoop up free money from the tax system. These include the tax returns filed by corporations, trusts, estates, and business partnerships. They’re also attacking the offices and computer systems of tax preparers, with a reported three to five new data breaches reported by preparers every week.
