Why It’s A Problem For Chipotle That No One Wants Its Queso

Negative social media reactions don’t always hurt a product’s sales, but in the case of Chipotle’s new queso dip, it appears that no one is rushing out to try the menu addition — and those who do purchase the queso may be taking away from sales of other items on the Chipotle menu

Queso’s not catching on

According to Markets Insider, BMO Capital Markets tallied up the orders that it observed, and the news is not great if Chipotle was hoping for queso to signficantly boost its sales. Only 15% of the orders included the cheese sauce on the entrée or as a side dish, while 40% included guacamole.

Wait — it actually gets worse: BMO’s restaurant analyst assumes that queso sales are probably cannibalizing some guacamole sales. This, because two-thirds of the all the orders that included queso had it added on top of a entree. Adding it to an entree is cheaper than asking for a dollop of guacamole, but ordering queso as a side dish with chips is more expensive than ordering guac and chips.

For example, here in Albany, NY, queso costs $1.30 to add to a burrito or bowl. A bowl of queso by itself costs $2.15, while a small chips and queso serving costs $3.50. A large chips and queso costs $5.45.

Guacamole as an entrée add-on costs $2.05, but guac and chips are ten cents cheaper than queso and chips at $3.40.

If people who otherwise would have had guacamole on their burrito are mostly getting the cheaper queso, then the new product is actually losing Chipotle money. But if everyone starts ordering a side of queso with chips, well, that might be better for Chipotle’s bottom line.

Cheese haters are gonna hate

In an internal memo that Bloomberg News obtained, the company’s chief marketing officer assures employees that customers like the queso just fine, and that while the company has “made progress in making it smoother,” it will never be identical to a dip using processed cheese products.

(Informal Consumerist testing found queso to be quite tasty, but it draws your attention to the chain’s thicker tortilla chips more than the guacamole does.)

“Baby Arm Johnson” And Two Others Plead Guilty To Parts In $12M Retail Theft Ring

If you’re going to be involved in a massive, nationwide retail theft scheme, you might as well have a good nickname — like “Baby Arm Johnson” or the “Field Marshall” — for when you get caught.

We didn’t just make those names up. Those are the actual aliases of two men — George Athanasatos (aka the Field Marshall), and Joseph “Baby Arm Johnson” Pooler — who pled guilty for their part in an organized theft ring that pilfered $12 million in electronics and ink cartridges from stores in 28 states. A third man, Robert Scarano also pleaded guilty, but since he doesn’t have a cool alias, he gets bottom billing.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced today an update to a joint investigation by his office’s Organized Crime Task Force and the New York State Police that led to the bust of one of the largest-ever organized retail theft rings.

The investigation, which lasted for 10 months and was code-named “Operation Sticky Fingers,” culminated in the indictment of 12 alleged members in March, now three of those individuals have pleaded guilty.

The Ring

According to the AG’s office, the operation worked by stealing millions of dollars in merchandise – including electronic goods and printer cartridges – from Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, and other retailers across 28 states for more than 20 years.

The agencies allege that organization leader Richard Rimbaugh instructed several theft crews — which consisted of two to three men — to steal specific products based on his ability to resell the stolen goods on Amazon and eBay through his illegitimate business, American Media Soft.

In all, the theft rings would steal from a series of retailers on a daily basis.

Rimbaugh would then receive the goods at his apartment where they were sorted, catalogued, and shipped for resale.

The products were typically resold for between 30% and 50% of the retail value. Since 2012 alone, the ring has sold more than $12 million of stolen goods via Amazon and eBay, the AG’s office alleges.

Through the investigation, authorities were able to recover more than 5,300 stolen electronics and printer cartridges, as well as $7.7 million.

“Retail theft is not a victimless crime. Ultimately, consumers pay higher prices while the perpetrators of these schemes cash in,” New York AG Eric Schneiderman said in a statement.

The Pleas

The AGs office notes that three members of the ring submitted guilty pleas today.

“Field Marshall” Athanasatos pleaded guilty to attempted enterprise corruption, criminal possession of stolen property in the third degree, and money laundering in the second degree.

Athanasatos reported directly to kingpin Rimbaugh and managed three of the four theft crews that delivered stolen merchandise.

He also allegedly managed the day-to-day operations of these three theft crews, dispatching them to various regions of the U.S. to conduct the thefts.

He will be sentenced to 3 ½ to 7 years in prison and will forfeit $439,204.88 in illegal proceeds, according to the AG’s office.

“Baby Arm Johnson” and Scarano — both of whom led theft crews responsible for dozens of heists — also entered guilty pleas to enterprise corruption.

Scarano will receive a sentence of two to six years in prison, while Pooler will be sentenced to one to three years.

Four members of this operation had already entered guilty pleas on enterprise corruption charges. There are five defendants — with nicknames like “The General,” “Skipper,” and “Captain Frank” — still facing charges.

Sorry, Colorado — New Law Means No More Weed Gummy Bears

If Maureen Dowd ever decides to go back to Colorado and give weed edibles another chance, she may have more success figuring out how strong that chocolate bar is — but she also won’t be able to buy any marijuana gummy bears: New state laws going into effect Oct. 1 require more prominent potency labels on edibles, as well as prohibiting certain shapes that could be mistaken for regular candy treats.

In an effort to keep kids from getting their hands on drug-laced candy Colorado will no longer allow retailers to sell any weed edibles that are shaped like animals, fruit, or humans, including any artistic, caricature, or cartoon renderings.

Geometric shapes and fruit flavors are fine, however.

The new rules also require products to have a larger potency label: Potency for medical and retail marijuana, concentrate and product must be labeled either in a font size that is at least two font sizes larger than the surrounding label text and also not less than 10 point font.

It also must be bold and enclosed within an outlined shape like a circle or a square, or highlighted with a bright color.

“These regulations reflect extensive stakeholder input focused on public safety and legislative intent,” said Mike Hartman, executive director for the Colorado Department of Revenue, in a recent statement. “Marijuana products in shape and branding should not be enticing to children and we want consumers to be educated about the potency of the products they are buying, these rules ensure that to be the case.”

Russia and the US will build a moon base | Engadget Today

Working together for the Deep Space Gateway. http://ift.tt/2fyIX9Y There have been rumors that the US and Russia would be teaming up to build a lunar base. Sources within the country told Popular Mechanics that the head of their space organization, Roscosmos, was set to announce a partnership agreement with NASA this week. Now, Roscosmos and NASA have both released statements saying stating the two countries' shared "common vision for human exploration." They go on to say that Russia and the US will cooperate on a Moon program, specifically mentioning the Deep Space Gateway by name. That's the base NASA plans to build in lunar orbit starting in the 2020s (the statement sets a mid-2020s goal for beginning the project). The release also mentions that other international partners are considering signing onto the lunar base. Apple Promises To Fix Weird Crackling Noise On iPhone 8 And 8 Plus

A new smartphone fresh out of the box shouldn’t make crackling noises during your phone calls, but that’s what users of the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus report, and they’re customers of different mobile carriers. Apple has acknowledged the problem, and promises that a fix for it is on the way.

One of the users experiencing the static-like problem is an editor at The Verge, which might have helped to make the problem more visible. However, users in all of the places where people typically discuss Apple device problems — Apple’s support forums, Macrumors, and Reddit — have showed up to discuss the issue.

Here’s what it sounds like, if you’re curious.

“We are aware of the issue which is affecting customers in a small number of cases,” a spokesperson for Apple told The Verge. “Our team is at work on a fix, which will be included in an upcoming software release.”

That implies that the problem is a software one, but specific to the iPhone 8.

iOS 11.0.1, a new version of Apple’s mobile and tablet operating system, reportedly contains “bug fixes” and has been rolling out to users over the last day. It does not include a fix for the crackling earpiece issue.

Uber Puts An End To Money-Losing Xchange Leasing Program

Uber’s Xchange Leasing program, which allowed Uber drivers to lease new cars that they could pay off by picking up passengers, was heavily criticized for charging lease rates far in excess of what drivers could get elsewhere, but it wasn’t until Uber realized it was losing boatloads of money on the program that it was in jeopardy — and now it’s being put to bed forever.

Uber confirmed to Consumerist today that it will close its U.S. auto-leasing business that provided would-be drivers with vehicles if they either didn’t own one or had personal vehicles that didn’t meet the company’s standards.

“We have decided to stop operating Xchange Leasing and move towards a less capital-intensive approach,” a rep for the company told Consumerist.

Concerns With Xchange?

Uber launched its Xchange Leasing program in 2015, offering new and used cars directly to drivers who used the company’s ride-hailing platform. The hope was that it would allow people — particularly recent immigrants or lower-income Americans who have no or bad credit — access to vehicles they could use on the job.

While Uber contended that the program offered people who may otherwise be rejected by traditional lenders an option to obtain a vehicle and make a living, Xchange was met with criticism from consumer advocates and drivers who found themselves unable to afford the costs.

Related: 4 Things To Know About Uber’s Singapore Leasing Program & Recall Issues

For instance, advocates and financial experts expressed concerns with the terms of the program, which saw the company charge rates far above the typical leasing prices for similar vehicles and automatically deduct the cost of the lease from drivers’ weekly checks.

Likewise, drivers complained that the high weekly leasing costs, coupled with Uber lowering the cost of some rides, made the vehicles unaffordable.

In one case, a driver who leased a 2016 Toyota Corolla paid $155 a week for the vehicle. Two months after starting the lease, the company slashed fare prices and he began having trouble keeping up with payments.

Losing Money

The decision to pull the plug on Xchange comes just a month after The Wall Street Journal reported claims that the company was losing a lot of money on Xchange Leasing — roughly “18 times what they thought” they would lose.

Sources told the WSJ that Uber never intended to make a profit on the leases, and that it had in fact been projecting acceptable losses of about $500 per vehicle. But in reality, per the Journal’s sources, Uber was losing around $9,000 per vehicle, or about half the MSRP of the average car.

Uber’s money troubles with the program reportedly stemmed from the company charging too much for the leased cars and being too generous with returns.

While the company was found to have charged significantly higher monthly payments for the vehicles — especially when their wear and tear is considered — it also allowed drivers to turn in their leased vehicles and end payments early without penalties.

Given the rapid turnover of drivers who either sour on the job or jump ship to the competition, this could have saddled Uber with cars that are now worth much less than when originally leased.

Dyson Working On Electric Car, Unclear If It Will Double As Street Sweeper

After years of pushing bright yellow pricey vacuum cleaners, Dyson says it’s now working on a new set of wheels — and these won’t fit in your hall closet.

Founder James Dyson sent an email to employees this week announcing a plan to clean up the air we breathe — instead of your dirty living room carpet — with a new electric vehicle slated to launch in 2020.

“We’ve started building an exceptional team that combines top Dyson engineers with talented individuals from the automotive industry,” he wrote, adding that the team is already over 400 strong, and that he’s committed to investing investing £2 billion on the endeavor.

As for details like who’s building the cars or whether or not the company is partnering with anyone, Dyson only says that project will “grow quickly” from this point, but that they’re not ready to release any specifics, citing fierce competition for new technology in the automotive industry.

Man on a mission

Preventing pollution from cars has been a longtime desire, Dyson writes in the letter, recounting how the company started work on a cyclonic filter that could be fitted on a vehicle’s exhaust system to trap particulates back in 1990. But after developing several prototypes, the company found to its chagrin that no one at the time was interested in the diesel exhaust capture project, so Dyson shut it down.

“The industry said that ‘disposing’ of collected soot was too much of a problem,” Dyson wrote. “Better to breathe it in?”

Despite that, it’s remained his ambition “to find a solution to the global problem of air pollution.” To that end, a few years ago, he committed the company to build new battery technologies, “with the belief that electrically-powered vehicles would solve the vehicle pollution problem.”

“At this moment, we finally have the opportunity to bring all our technologies together in a single product,” Dyson wrote. “Rather than filtering emissions at the exhaust pipe, today we have the ability to solve it at the source.”

Target Ends Freshii Concept, Closing 18 Salad & Wrap Cafes

After only two years, Target is giving up on a test of offering customers salads, pressed juices, and other supposedly healthy foods. The retailer is closing the handful of Freshii cafes it’s operated in stores since 2015.

Freshii — a Toronto-based sandwich and wrap chain — announced this week that it will close 18 cafes located in Target stores starting this month.

Seventeen of the locations have already closed, Freshii notes, while the final location will close later this year.

The company says that the decision to close the locations came after sales levels did not “support a continued investment of resources by both parties.”

For its part, a rep for Target tells the Minneapolis Star Tribune that the relations ended after the tests “did not meet our shared business goals.”

Target announced in Aug. 2015 that it was testing the new cafe concept as an alternative to Starbucks, popcorn, hot dogs, and cheese-drenched nachos.

At the time, the retailer said the tests came about after it heard from customers who were looking for more high-quality food and a fast-casual atmosphere.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are here, and ironically their biggest competition is arguably from Apple itself. Child Makes Adorable Case In Favor Of Toys ‘R’ Us

The filings in bankruptcy cases, especially large and complex ones, tend to be long and not terribly exciting reading. You can find important bits of information like store closing lists and gift card policies, but what one doesn’t expect to find among thousands of pages of legal forms is a handwritten letter from a child defending a chain retailer with 866 stores.

Then again, most bankruptcies don’t involve toy stores. That’s why a letter to the bankruptcy judge from a concerned consumer known only as “Andrew” got its own entry on the Toys ‘R’ Us docket.

Here’s a transcript of the letter, with light corrections of spelling and capitalization.

Dear Judge Phillips,

My name is Andrew [Redacted]. I’m 9 years old. Toys R Us closing will be bad for kids. These are the reasons why:

1. Kids like that there is a store just for them.

2. Kids would rather be promised a trip to Toys R Us than any other store.

3. Kids can run through the aisles at Toys R Us and find stuff they like but in any other store there won’t just be toys. Kids might not have a device to see online stores or it’s easier to browse in a real store than online.

Please don’t let Toys R Us close it will make kids very unhappy.

From,

Andrew [Redacted]

This isn’t the end

This is an inspiring letter for anyone who questions the future of brick and mortar retail, though it would be interesting to catch up with Andrew in 2029 or so and find out what he thinks about buying things online rather than in a store.

Andrew had the same initial reaction that many adults did when hearing about the bankruptcy filing of Toys ‘R’ Us, and assumed that “bankruptcy” means “closing its doors forever.” That isn’t necessarily the case, but the letter serves as a nice break in a pile of bankruptcy documents that has already included an old advertising jingle.

The retailer may close some stores, or combine Toys ‘R’ Us and Babies ‘R’ Us stores, but as far as we know, plans to stay in business. Also, don’t run in the aisles of a store, Andrew.

Southwest Airlines Apologizes After Video Shows Woman Being Forcibly Removed From Plane

Southwest Airlines apologized today after a video made the rounds this week showing a passenger being forcefully removed from a plane.

The Baltimore Sun reports that the incident occurred Tuesday evening when a woman — flying from Baltimore to Los Angeles — complained about two animals on the plane and informed Southwest crew members that she had a life-threatening pet allergy.

The flight, which was scheduled to depart around 8:40 p.m., had an emotional support animal and another pet abroad.

A fellow passenger tells NBC Los Angeles that the woman asked the crew to remove the dogs because of her allergy. When the crew told her they couldn’t remove the animals, the woman asked for an injection to alleviate her symptoms.

However, the airline couldn’t provide her with an injection if she didn’t have a proper medical certificate.

Per the airline’s policies, a passenger can be denied boarding if they report a life-threatening allergic reaction without a medical certificate and cannot travel safely with an animal, a rep for the airline says. The airline’s allergy policy notes that passengers can be seated as far away as possible from animals, but that the airline is required to fly emotional support animals.

As a result, she was asked to exit the plane.

A rep for Southwest tells NBC Los Angeles that the crew made repeated attempts to explain the situation to the customer but she refused to leave the aircraft and law enforcement was brought in.

A video taken by another passenger shows the woman being removed from the plane by two officers.

In the video, the woman – who is being dragged by the officers at first — can be heard multiple times asking the officers what they are doing, and noting that they had ripped her pants.

She also tells the officers that she will walk off, exclaiming, “Don’t touch me.” As they make their way down the aisle, the officers can then be heard yelling at the woman, to “walk” occasionally moving her forward themselves.

“We are disheartened by the way this situation unfolded and the Customer’s removal by local law enforcement officers,” Southwest said in a statement. “We publicly offer our apologies to this customer for her experience and we will be contacting her directly to address her concerns.”

The flight departed about 35 minutes behind schedule.

Delta Now Lets Passengers Send (Some) Inflight Text Messages

The next time you’re on a Delta Air Lines flight and want to tell the pal picking you up at the airport that your flight is delayed (or ask your mom to please make sure there are cheese curds in the refrigerator upon your arrival), you’ll be able to send a text message from the air — for free.

Starting Oct. 1, Delta will allow passengers to send mobile messages for free using platforms like iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook messenger, by connecting to Delta’s WiFi portal on any Gogo-enabled flight, which includes all planes with two or more cabins.

You’ll only be able to send texts, however — the free messaging feature doesn’t support sending photos or videos.

The airline says this makes it the first of U.S. airline to offer free mobile messaging.

“We know many of Delta’s customers want or need to stay connected in the air and on the ground, which is why we’re investing in an easy, free way to send and receive messages inflight through some of the most popular global platforms,” said Tim Mapes, Delta’s Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.

The Average Nursing Home Room Now Costs Nearly $100K Per Year

Sure, you might be a spry 30-something living your best life, leaving the future for the future. But a new report suggests you might want to start planning for you later years, as the costs of long-term care are surging and don’t appear to be stabilizing anytime soon.

While long-term care can be provided in a variety of settings — from in-home health aides to private nursing home facilities — each option comes at an expense, and it keeps growing.

A new report [PDF] from Genworth Financial found that the medical cost of long-term care has increased 4.5% percent in just the last year.

The increases represent the second-highest year-over-year increase for nursing homes and home care since the company began tracking costs in 2004.

Nursing Home Care

Genworth’s report looked at a variety of care options, but notes that consumers in need of around-the-clock care will likely seek out a nursing home facility. But these facilities also come with the highest cost.

According to the report, private rooms in a nursing home have increased 5.5%, while the cost of a semi-private room has increased 4.44%.

The national average for a patient to live in a private room at a nursing home is $8,121/month, or roughly $97,452/year. Move to a semi-private room and the cost drops slightly to $7,148/month, or $85,776/year.

While you might think those costs are pretty steep, it will only climb over time.

In 2027, the cost for a private room increases to $10,914 per month, or $130,968/year, while the semi-private room will run $9,606/month, or $115,272/year.

In-Home Services

Families looking to keep their loved ones at home, but with a little bit of help, will also find their expenses increasing.

For instance, home health aide services — which involve “hands-on” personal care — have increased 6.17% to $4,099/month.

On the other hand, homemaker services — which is described as hands-off care, such as cooking, cleaning, and running errands — have increased 4.75% to $3,994/month.

In the future, the costs continue to climb. A home health aide will cost $5,509/month in 2027, while homemaker services will increase to $5,368/month in 10 years.

Contributing Factors

Genworth notes that the increases in long-term care can be attributed to a perfect storm of labor shortages, increases to minimum wages, tighter Medicare rules, and sicker patients.

For example, nursing home costs have increased due to a combination of higher labor costs and tightened Medicare rules, which have resulted in shortened hospital stays and sicker patients being sent to rehab nursing homes for shorter stays, where costs have risen to cover those chronic medical conditions, Noreen Guanci, CEO and co-founder of Long Term Solutions, said in a statement.

Additionally, room and board has also increased over the past two to three years in order to accommodate residents who are sicker.

Why Do We Care?

While many consumers aren’t thinking of their future long-term care needs, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t.

This is especially true, Genworth found, when it comes to consumers’ expectations of their own out-of-pocket costs.

A consumer sentiment survey conducted in conjunction with the Cost of Care Survey found that nearly two-thirds of respondents expect government programs to cover allow part of their long-term care costs.

However, that likely won’t be the case, Genworth reports. Medicare, for example, will pay for limited nursing home care following a three-day hospital stay, but only if the patient has been formally admitted to a Medicare-certified nursing facility as an in-patient and not for observation.

Medicare also doesn’t pay for home care, if skilled nursing care is not needed.

“The purpose of the study is to raise awareness about the cost of aging and help start the conversation about planning for long-term care,” David O’Leary, president and CEO of Genworth’s US Life Division, said in a statement.

FDA Changes Tune, Will Require Restaurant Menu Calorie Info Starting May 2018

After repeatedly delaying the requirement that restaurants post calorie counts and other nutritional information on their menus — and after being sued by groups alleging that these delays are against the law — the Food and Drug Administration has finally agreed to start enforcing the menu labeling rule, beginning in May 2018.

The rule, which had already been kicked down the road twice by the FDA, was supposed to go into effect in May 2017, but only days before the deadline the FDA said the Trump administration was reconsidering the long-delayed rule because it “did not have all the relevant facts,” even though the agency had already had nearly seven years to come to that conclusion.

In June, the Center for Science in the Public Interest and the National Consumers League sued the agency after it pushed back an earlier enforcement deadline just one day before enforcement was set to begin.

Then in August, Earthjustice — the law firm representing CSPI and NCL — and the Department of Justice agreed to stay further proceedings after FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said there would be no more delays and no changes to the menu labeling requirements.

Moving forward

Today, a U.S. district court judge in Washington, D.C. approved an agreement [PDF] that will put that lawsuit on ice. However, if the FDA announces any other delays of enforcement or doesn’t issue guidance to the industry — clarifying the menu labeling rule and aiding implementation — by the end of 2017, or weakens its requirements, the complaint could go forward.

Advocates for menu labeling praised the agreement, saying consumers need information about what they’re eating.

“Since Americans are getting more food outside the home than ever before, having access to calorie information at chain restaurants is important for consumers who want to maintain a healthy weight and reduce their risk of diet-related disease,” said CSPI vice president for nutrition Margo G. Wootan, noting that most of the biggest chain restaurants already provide calorie counts on menus and menu boards.

Our colleagues at Consumers Union also applauded the news.

“With these new labels, consumers will be able to find calorie counts in many more places,” says William Wallace, policy analyst for Consumers Union, the policy and mobilization division of Consumer Reports. “After long delays, we’re pleased that chain restaurants and other food retailers will be required to give consumers this critical nutrition information starting in the spring.”

Trouble ahead?

But proponents of calorie counts on menus warn that there could still be trouble ahead, pointing to a bill introduced earlier this year called the Common Sense Disclosure Act. If it becomes law, it would allow takeout chains — like pizza restaurants — to post their nutritional information solely online, and not at the actual restaurant.

The pending legislation would also not require the online menu be visible when you place an order, whether on an app or through social media. Thus, a restaurant could bury this info somewhere on the eatery’s site.

In addition, the bill gets rid of a section of the rule that requires restaurants to display the number of calories contained in the standard menu item, as “usually prepared and offered for sale,” and replace it with language that would allow a business to list the calories for say, half a muffin, or one slice of pizza, instead of the whole thing.

“We hope Congress resists the efforts of outlier companies, notably Domino’s and other pizza chains, to weaken menu labeling,” Wootan said.

A history of delays

The FDA first finalized the menu labeling rule more than three years ago, slating enforcement and compliance to begin by the end of 2015.

But then the agency delayed that deadline — not oce, but three times, pushing it first to 2016, then 2017, and again in May, to 2018. That last delay is what prompted CSPI and NLC’s lawsuit in June.

The Echo Show Is The Site Of A Google-Amazon Showdown

Earlier this year, Amazon launched the Echo Show, which is exactly what it sounds like: a version of its Echo smart speaker that includes a seven-inch color screen so it can show users photos, videos, and messages. One of the device’s selling points is that users can watch YouTube videos on it… or they could before Google removed their access.

Echo Show users are in the crossfire of a feud between two of the internet giants that control our lives, Amazon and Google.

“Google has chosen to no longer make YouTube available on Echo Show, without explanation and without notification to customers,” Amazon announced late yesterday, according to The Verge, calling the decision a “disappointing” one for which there is no technical explanation.

“A broken user experience”

Google, which owns YouTube, countered that there is a technical reason for the decision. Kind of. Its problem with the Echo Show is that yes, it displays YouTube videos, but not the way that Google wants them displayed.

“Amazon’s implementation of YouTube on the Echo Show violates our terms of service, creating a broken user experience,” Google said in its own statement. “We hope to be able to reach an agreement and resolve these issues soon.”

Specifically, the Echo Show leaves out features that are meant to keep users coming back to YouTube and using it for longer, such as recommendations of more videos to watch, and solicitations to subscribe to a video creator’s channel for future content.

Amazon’s voice-activated devices are the current best sellers in the category, and such a feud is likely to only hurt both companies.

“Things get harder for end users because these companies can’t get along,” technology analyst Jan Dawson told Reuters.

iPhone X Production Hiccup Could Lead To Shortages

One of the most-talked about features of Apple’s upcoming iPhone X — “Face ID,” which allows a user to unlock their phone by looking at it — is causing a headache for the company: Issues with the facial recognition system are reportedly slowing down production, and could translate into widespread shortages when the high-end phones finally go on sale.

Two components, both alike in dignity…

According to insiders who spoke to The Wall Street Journal, the trouble is centered on a pair of facial recognition components dubbed Romeo and Juliet.

The Romeo component uses a laser to beam infrared dots onto the user’s face to map unique characteristics, while the Juliet module reads the pattern with an infrared camera.

Apparently it takes longer to assemble the Romeo modules than the Juliet modules, and as a result, there weren’t enough Romeos to pair up with all of the Juliets sitting around, causing the whole production process to slow down.

One of the sources says the Romeo assembly process is now moving along. Apple declined to comment to the WSJ.

Looming shortages?

While there are usually some supply shortfalls, one of those “folks familiar with the matter” says this may all lead to a bigger than usual shortage on Nov. 3 when the $1,049 phone starts shipping to customers.

Any shortages could set off a ripple effect that may last into the holiday season, potentially pushing shoppers toward other phones.

“If iPhone X availability issues persist beyond November 15 and into the holiday season, we could see some frustrated iPhone users consider switching to other offerings,” one analyst said in a recent note.

Troubles past

This isn’t the first hiccup in the iPhone X production process, either: The phone didn’t join its siblings — the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus — in going on sale last week partly because of issues this summer with its screens, the WSJ notes.

Face ID also didn’t perform that well during its coming-out party at the Apple launch event earlier this month, refusing to unlock fully during a demonstration. That was because the feature had been accidentally disabled before the event, Apple said later.
