The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 will be offered outside of China | Engadget Today
Another bezel-less smartphone in one solid ceramic piece. http://ift.tt/2eQ5OtX For most of us living outside of China, we tend to be limited to two options when it comes to the choice of materials on our phones: either metal or plastic, or a bit of both (and maybe a touch of wood, if you're lucky). While Essential was grabbing headlines with its titanium device, Xiaomi continued tinkering with something that many others dare not touch: ceramics. Following the Mi MIX, the Chinese smartphone maker has once again collaborated with Philippe Starck's design studio to bring us yet another ceramic device with a near-bezel-less display: the Mi MIX 2. Volkswagen Pledges To Make Electric Versions Of All Its Vehicles By 2030
What’s one way to avoid major emissions-cheating scandals? Make cars that don’t run on fuel: As part of the company’s previously announced plan make up for Dieslgate by focusing on electric cars, Volkswagen says it’ll build electric versions of all 300 models it offers by 2030.
It’s electric
Ahead of the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany, the company said it will be investing €6 billion in electric mobility over the next five years. For starters, VW announced a new electric concept vehicle — dubbed the I.D. CROZZ — which won’t hit the market until 2022.
RELATED: Volkswagen Resurrecting The Microbus With New Electric Version
By 2025, VW plans to roll out 80 new electric cars — up from its previous goal of 30 — and by 2030, the company’s CEO says it’ll have an electric version of all its cars. VW says it’s willing to plug a further €20 billion into that effort, as well as €50 billion more to buy the batteries needed to power the cars, Bloomberg reports.
“Customers want clean vehicles. People want to have clean air, and we want to make our contribution here,” CEO Matthias Mueller told BBC News at the auto show.
Money matters
Despite expenses related to Dieselgate over the last few years, Mueller says the company won’t have to sell any assets to fund its electric car efforts.
Although we have suffered financially in the past two years because of the diesel issue, we are positioned well enough in financial terms to be able to shoulder these investments without problems,” he told Reuters.
It’ll take some time for VW to go beyond combustion engines, as the infrastructure needed for electric vehicles needs to catch up first.
“There will be a coexistence between internal combustion engines and electric drive systems for a certain period — I can’t tell you how long that will be,” Mueller told the BBC.

American Airlines Flight Cancelled Due To Stowaway Scorpion
An American Airlines flight out of Sacramento was canceled over the weekend because of a stowaway that made both passengers and crew members uncomfortable. That stowaway? A scorpion.
The plane most likely picked up passenger number 126 during its previous stop in Phoenix, and the crew learned about it while passengers for the flight from Sacramento to Chicago were preparing to board, the Sacramento Bee reports.
The airline ultimately decided to cancel the flight, booking passengers on other, presumably scorpion-free, flights instead.
“The flight was canceled because we want passengers and crews to feel comfortable,” an airline spokeswoman told the Bee.
While scorpion stings from species native to North America are generally not life-threatening, they can be very painful.
The airline didn’t know whether the scorpion was still on the plane, or whether it had any friends, so the aircraft was sent to a maintenance facility for fumigation to ensure that it’s bug-free before making any more trips.
American Airlines doesn’t allow scorpions on its planes in any official capacity, even if they’re pets. Only cats and dogs are allowed in the cabin or in the cargo hold or the cabin of planes.
Arachnids can cause chaos on planes whether they’re allowed or not, though.
• A pet tarantula escaped its carrier on a Delta flight in 2015, delaying takeoff until humans could find it.
• A scorpion stung a woman on an Alaska Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Portland, OR, while the plane was taxiing, and returned to the gate. She received medical attention, and the crew searched overhead bins for more scorpions.
• Tarantulas on an Air Transat flight might have been smuggled pets or stowaways, but they were an “aggressive” non-venomous species that can grow up to eight inches long.
After what was already a bad week for United after its infamous passenger-dragging incident, a scorpion fell on a passenger’s head and stung him during a flight from Houston to Calgary.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 first look
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is the Chinese company's second take at a full-screen smartphone. It has a 5.99-inch screen with a thin border above and to the sides, plus a ceramic back. A Special Edition of the phone comes with a full ceramic unibody, which looks great unless you drop it, a surprisingly easy thing to do. Xiaomi will sell the Mi Mix 2 in China and other countries soon, but it unfortunately won't be coming to the US. Pizza Hut Is Sorry-ish That Store Stopped Workers From Fleeing Florida Ahead Of Hurricane
For the better part of a week, residents in areas expected to be affected by Hurricane Irma were making plans to evacuate. But at least one Pizza Hut restaurant in Florida tried to restrict employee’s evacuation plans ahead of the storm.
A Jacksonville Pizza Hut allegedly issued rules telling workers they couldn’t evacuate for the hurricane days before it was expected to hit the state.
The rule first made the rounds on social media over the weekend.
@pizzahut this is how y'all treat your employees? I think I'll take my eating business elsewhere! #HurrcaneIrma #DoBetter http://pic.twitter.com/coibnGD2wf
— Itsmisspickle (@itsmisspickle) September 10, 2017
“Our #1 priority is the safety and security of our team,” the letter reads. “But we also have a responsibility and commitment to our community to be there when they need us. With that said, I/we need some guidelines in place to ensure both those expectations are met.”
Those expectations, according to the rules, included a reminder that the store wouldn’t close until six to 12 hours before the storm hits.
Workers who were planning to evacuate were told they would have a 24-hour “grace period” before the storm to not be scheduled.
“You can not evacuate Friday for a Tuesday storm event!” the note declares, adding that those who evacuate must return within 72 hours.
Additionally, failure to show up for shifts — regardless of reason — would be considered a no call/no show.
Despite telling workers they couldn’t evacuate days prior to the storm, the restaurant advised workers to “prepare now” for the hurricane by buying supplies early.
Twitter users expressed their dissatisfaction with the chain over the weekend, claiming that it appeared Pizza Hut was putting profits ahead of employee safety.
Pizza Hut is willing to kill people FOR PIZZA!!!!! http://pic.twitter.com/6ei6viaDmz
— Jared Oban (@jaredoban) September 10, 2017
"The community needs @pizzahut" is the worst excuse I've ever heard for anything, nevermind threatening evacuees.
— Carmine (@carminemac) September 10, 2017
This is a genuinely grotesque display of complete inhumanity and has nothing to do with "serving your community." http://pic.twitter.com/6wr6pMwbHX
— Ally (@CapriDialogues) September 10, 2017
The chain replied to users to say the rule were “not what our company stands for.”
Pizza Hut issued a statement on the incident, noting that all locations in the path of Irma have been closed and will remain closed until authorities deem those areas safe.
“We absolutely do not have a policy that dictates when team members can leave or return from a disaster, and the manager who posted this letter did not follow company guidelines,” the company said. “We can also confirm that the local franchise operator has addressed this situation with the manager involved.”
Consumerist has reached out to Pizza Hut parent company Yum! Brands for additional comment on the photo.

Need An Aspirin Or Some Deodorant? CVS Vending Machines Offer On-The-Go Options
We’ve all been there: You’re going about your day when suddenly, your stomach is growling, you’re struck with a blinding headache, and you realize you forgot to put on deodorant before you left the house. So now if you’re having one of those days when everything goes wrong, CVS wants you to hit up one of their brand-new vending machines for a quick fix.
CVS is rolling out new vending machines at “select landmark locations” in the Northeast, like airports — including New York City’s LaGuardia Airport — public transit stations, and college campuses. The first 25 machines will be ready for business between now and the end of October, and CVS is considering adding 50 or more locations elsewhere in the country in the future.
Although machines will each be customized to suit the location they’re in, they’ll be stocked with things like over-the-counter medications, beauty and personal care products, eye care and oral health care products, first aid items, batteries, phone chargers, earbuds, and healthy snacks and beverages.
Machines accept all major credit and debit cards, and feature a touch screen that can bring up high resolution images with expansive product information and a QR code reader to read barcodes and promotional codes.
“These new vending machines allow us to make our innovative CVS Brand products available to customers outside of our store locations for the very first time,” said Cia Tucci, Vice President of Store Brands and Quality Assurance at CVS Health. “The CVS Pharmacy vending machines will be located in places where we can bring our customers smart solutions and convenient access to the products they trust when they are on-the-go.”

Twitter May Be Testing A Feature That Automates Tweetstorms
When posting on Twitter, you’re limited to 140 characters. You can only replace so many words with emojis, which is why people share extended thoughts in the form of “tweetstorms,” or linked Tweets that tell a longer story. This is tricky to put together, though. In an effort to make it easier, Twitter may be testing a way to automate the process.
If you don’t spend a lot of time on Twitter, imagine sending a friend an extended rant over multiple old-fashioned SMS text messages. The modern Tweetstorm convention means posting each new Tweet as a reply to the previous one so they microblogging site keeps them together. Optionally, users number each message to make the whole thread easier to follow.
TechCrunch reports that one user discovered in the Android version of Twitter’s official mobile app a function that let him automatically turn a longer rant into a correctly formatted Tweetstorm.
WOAH! Twitter has a hidden tweet storm feature!
h/t Devesh Logendran http://pic.twitter.com/QpDLhKnAZZ
— Matt Navarra ⭐️ (@MattNavarra) September 10, 2017
Would making Tweetstorms easier to create be a good thing or a bad one for Twitter’s users? The format has fans and detractors, but the site has automated and integrated things that its users have invented on their own. Even basic features like the retweet and the hashtag were user-driven inventions that Twitter later made part of its software.
Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas, might have found even more traction with his anti-Comcast Tweetstorm had the posts been threaded so it were easier to read them all together.

Will Your Smartphone Manufacturer Repair Your Hurricane-Damaged Phone?
In times of disaster, we often rely on our smartphones to check on loved ones or connect with relief organizations. But that’s a difficult task if your device has been damaged during the storm. To that end, some smartphone manufacturers are offering free repairs to victims of Hurricane Harvey.
Google has teamed up with UBreakiFix to offer free Pixel repairs to customers in the Houston area.
The companies say that the effort is their attempt to “provide some small relief” to customers and friends in the area.
Customers can take their damaged phones to one of seven UBreakiFix stores in the area until Sept. 30 for free repairs.
It’s unclear if Google will expand its offer to cover any phones damaged by Hurricane Irma, which made landfall on Florida over the weekend. Consumerist has reached out to the company for additional information.
As for Google’s competitors, customers began reporting last week that Apple was offering some free phone repairs for Hurricane Harvey victims.
9to5Google reports that Apple has been repairing Houston customers’ devices that suffered water damage or that were broken during evacuation free of charge. These types of damage, 9to5Google reports, would not typically be covered by Apple’s warranty.
So far, it appears these repairs have occurred on a case-by-case basis. Consumerist has reached out to Apple for additional information on the repairs, and whether or not they will be extended to residents in Florida. If we hear anything back, we’ll update this post.
It is unclear if Samsung is offering similar repairs to hurricane victims. We’ve reached out to the company and will add any additional information we receive to this post.

Nordstrom Concept Store Doesn’t Stock Actual Clothing But It Does Offer Booze
While you can easily shop for clothes online from the comfort of your couch with a glass of your favorite beverage to hand — would you be willing to leave the house if you could get both wine and professional styling advice? Nordstrom hopes so: The retailer is launching a tiny store that doesn’t stock any actual products, but will offer shoppers boozy beverages to sip while they try stuff on.
Nordstrom’s new retail concept — dubbed Nordstrom Local — will open Oct. 3 in West Hollywood, CA, the retailer announced Monday.
At just 3,000 square feet, it’s a lot smaller than a traditional Nordstrom, which is usually around 140,000 square feet. Inside, there are eight dressing rooms surrounded by a common space where customers can hang out, drink a glass of wine, beer, or espresso, and talk to the personal stylists.
The idea here is service, not inventory: Along with beverages, on-site manicures, alterations, and tailoring will be available, Nordstrom says.
Stylists will be able to transfer products from other stores for customers to try on, while shoppers can pick up items they’ve purchased online on the same day, or make returns.
“We know there are more and more demands on a customer’s time and we wanted to offer our best services in a convenient location to meet their shopping needs,” said Shea Jensen, Nordstrom senior vice president of customer experience.

Equifax Drops Controversial Condition From Free Credit Monitoring Service
While the free credit monitoring service being offered by Equifax to the millions victims of its massive data breach leaves a lot to be desired, the company is remedying one of the more controversial aspects of the program — a condition that stripped consumers of their right to file a lawsuit in court.
The EquifaxSecurity2017.com site set up in response to the breach allows people affected by the cyber attack to sign up for free access to the company’s TrustedID monitoring service. When it launched last week, the Terms of Use for TrustedID included what’s known as a forced arbitration clause.
READ MORE: Don’t Take Equifax Up On Its Credit Monitoring Offer
That clause did two things. First, it strips all TrustedID users of their right to file a lawsuit against the service in a court of law. Instead, all legal disputes would have to be settled outside of the legal system through private arbitration. Second, it barred users from joining their disputes together into a class-action, even through arbitration.
So imagine if there was a second data breach, this time of TrustedID users. Each individual customer would have to go through private arbitration one at a time. Arbitration results set no precedents and are often confidential. That means that each case — even though they would all effectively share the same allegations — could have a different outcome, and there’d likely be no public record of these decisions.
The presence in the arbitration clause for TrustedID led to a lot of people being very concerned that Equifax was trying to backdoor more than 100 million people into signing away their right to sue the company over the underlying breach. Last week, Equifax told Consumerist in a statement that the arbitration clause only applied to the TrustedID service and not to the original theft of consumer data.
That still didn’t ease concerns, with customers and consumer advocates calling for Equifax to ditch the arbitration clause altogether.
This morning, Equifax obliged. In an update to the EquifaxSecurity2017 homepage, the company said that it has removed the clause from its terms from the breach response page and clarified that enrolling in TrustedID as part of this breach response “does not waive any rights to take legal action.”
It looks like customers who sign up for TrustedID on their own outside of this site are, however, still agreeing to cede their right to a day in court.
The legal rights advocates at Public Citizen simultaneously applauded the decision to remove the clause in this case, while pointing out that Equifax still has a long way to go.
“It maintains a forced arbitration clause on its primary website, which by its terms extends to TrustedID.com,” explains Public Citizen. “Consumers cannot depend on financial corporations to do the right thing. We need a guaranteed protection of our right to hold corporations accountable for wrongdoing through class-action lawsuits.”
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recently passed new rules that would have barred Equifax and a number of other financial services companies from using forced arbitration clauses in consumer contracts. However, bank-backed lawmakers and the Trump administration are currently attempting to stop those rules from going into effect. The House of Representatives has already approved a measure that would undo the CFPB rules; the Senate has until later this fall to decide whether it chooses the American people or the interests of the commercial banking and retail lobbies.

Cruise Ships Bringing Supplies, Rescuing People From Islands Hit By Hurricane Irma
While many travelers prepping for an island vacation had their cruise plans put on hold as Hurricane Irma brewed, several of those cruise lines have once again disembarked, this time to deliver supplies and pick up those stranded in the Caribbean.
Ships operated by Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean departed this weekend to bring supplies and rescue thousands of people stranded on islands affected by the hurricane.
Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line announced Sunday that it would deploy its Norwegian Sky to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands to bring supplies and assist in all efforts taking place on the island.
The ship is expected to pick up about 2,000 people from St. Thomas who were unable to depart the island prior to the Hurricane Irma’s arrival.
Norwegian also notes that its Escape ship was en route to Miami Sunday, sailing with approximately 4,000 displaced guests that were unable to secure flights home before the storm. The ship was located near Cozumel, Mexico awaiting word on when Port Miami reopens.
As for the company’s future trips, until further notice, any ship scheduled to traverse the Eastern Caribbean will be rerouted to the Western Caribbean itinerary until November.
Royal Caribbean
Two ships packed with supplies from Royal Caribbean has been mobilized to assist those in need in the Caribbean, the company said Monday.
On Sunday, Adventure of the Seas made a humanitarian stop in St. Maarten, while Majesty of the Seas is scheduled to make humanitarian calls in St. Thomas and St. Maarten to provide supplies and also assist in transporting evacuees to safety.
The company notes that it also has another ship — Empress of the Seas — ready to assist residents in Key West once the impact of the storm is known.
As a result of the storm and the damage sustained on many islands in the Caribbean, the cruise company notes that its Sept. 13 Cuba cruise and Sept. 15 Bahamas cruise have been canceled.
Customers scheduled for these trips will receive a full refund and a 25% credit for a future cruise if booked in the next 30 days.

Tesla Expanding Supercharger Stations Into City Centers
One of the biggest perks of owning an electric car? Skipping the gas station. But because not everyone has a house with a garage that they can charge a vehicle in overnight, Tesla is now expanding its Supercharger stations to city centers.
Noting that there is a “growing” network of Superchargers located along highways on popular driving routes as well as thousands of Destination Charging connectors at hotels, resorts, and restaurants, Tesla announced on Monday that it will expand Supercharger networks into big cities, starting with downtown Chicago and Boston.
Supercharger stations will be installed in “convenient areas” in urban locations, including supermarkets, shopping centers and downtown districts, “so it’s easy for customers to charge their car in the time it takes to grocery shop or run errands.”
Although each one will have the same pricing as existing Superchargers, the new stations will have a new post design that occupies less space than other chargers, which is ideal for densely populated areas.
“To increase efficiency and support a high volume of cars, these Superchargers have a new architecture that delivers a rapid 72 kilowatts of dedicated power to each car,” the company explains, which means that charging speed won’t be affected if someone else plugs in their Tesla next to yours. This will allow most drivers to charge their cars in about 45 to 50 minutes, Tesla says.

Don’t Take Equifax Up On Its Credit Monitoring Offer
As anyone able to tear themselves away from hurricane bulletins last week knows, credit reporting bureau Equifax shared the news that the personal information of 143 million Americans was compromised earlier this year. Yet while plenty of companies, including Equifax itself, are happy to give or sell you credit monitoring services after such a massive breach, that doesn’t mean you should take them up on it.
The Equifax breach isn’t the largest in in history; that dubious honor goes to Yahoo, which had the login details of more than 1 billion accounts stolen on its watch.
This was, however, the largest known breach of data that’s useful to identity thieves. Information that was taken includes:
• Names
• Dates of birth
• Addresses
• Social Security numbers
• Driver’s license numbers
The information stolen could be used for anything from filing a tax return in your name to taking out loans and credit card accounts.
Credit monitoring: Don’t bother
People with common sense have criticized Equifax for using the breach to sell its own identity theft protection services. The company is offering victims a year of its TrustedID service, which requires them to opt in to mandatory binding arbitration for disputes over TrustedID.
Post-breach credit monitoring services are a thriving mini-industry. Equifax is one of the financial services companies providing these services that benefits whenever there’s a credit card or personal data breach, since firms routinely offer identity theft protection as part of a standard apology package after a breach of personal data and/or payment card numbers.
The problem with such services is that they don’t prevent anyone from stealing your personal data or opening accounts in your name. They just let you know a little bit faster when it happens.
You can enroll in the services that Equifax is offering if you want to, but be sure to remember to cancel them or to not renew them when the free year is up.
Freeze It
Placing a freeze on your accounts is an important step if you’re concerned that you might be a victim of identity theft or another financial crime. Here’s how to do it. It isn’t foolproof, but it is cheaper and more secure than paying monthly or yearly for credit monitoring services. It costs up to $12 per credit bureau, but there’s no cost for residents of some states.
Read more: My Identity Was Stolen, Then TransUnion Let The Fraudster Unfreeze My Accounts
A freeze should prevent anyone from opening accounts under your name, including you. This might be good if you want to keep yourself from opening any new credit cards, but can also be inconvenient. So you should probably hold off on placing a freeze if you’re planning to apply for a mortgage, auto loan, or other major debt instrument in the next few weeks.
Bad PINs
Users who had frozen their Equifax reports have noted that their PINs, the codes used to lift the freeze and open the credit report up for queries and opening new accounts, were simply a timestamp of when they requested the freeze.
OMG, Equifax security freeze PINs are worse than I thought. If you froze your credit today 2:15pm ET for example, you'd get PIN 0908171415.
— Tony Webster (@webster) September 9, 2017
The company switched to assigning random numbers only after customers pointed this out.
“We understand and appreciate that consumers have questions about how a PIN is currently generated for a consumer initiating an Equifax security freeze solution. All consumers placing a security freeze will be provided a randomly generated PIN,” the company’s site for breach information now says.
One customer recounted to The New York Times that he found himself explaining credit freezes and PINs to a representative at the Equifax call center. While it’s good that the company has put as many people on the call floor as possible to help customers, it shouldn’t be up to customers to train them.

Irma Continues To Snarl Travel As It Heads To Georgia, South Carolina
Although Irma has now been downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm, it’s still got plenty of juice in it as it continues to rage in Florida and move towards Georgia and South Carolina. And that means trouble may still be tricky in the coming days, as some airports remain closed and airlines cancel hundreds of flights.
If you have plans to fly in or out of any of storm-affected areas this week, you’ll want to check with the airline before you head to the airport. To that end, Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines is bracing for Irma and has canceled about 800 flights on Monday already.
Again, if you’re unsure about your travel plans, check with your airline.
Airlines
Alaska/Virgin America: On Sunday night, Alaska announced that it’s canceled additional Seattle flights to and from Atlanta and Charleston, S.C. on Monday due to the effects of Irma.
“We’ll continue to watch the storm and its impacts, which could affect how soon airports will reopen,” the airline says.
Allegiant Airlines: Allegiant has canceled a slew of flights in Florida and Georgia, and has not yet said when they would be rescheduled. Passengers will be able to request a one-time change to their travel plans without recurring change/cancel fees
American Airlines: American has updated its list of airports affected by Irma, and is offering travel waivers to customers whose plans are impacted by the storm so they can change their plans without paying rebooking fees.
The airline has also capped fares at $99 each way for main cabin, and $199 for premium cabin, on direct, single leg flights from all cities covered under the travel alert in Florida, as well as Charleston, S.C, Hilton Head, SC, Myrtle Beach, SC; and Savannah, GA, through Sept. 17.
Delta Air Lines: Delta said it’s canceled about 800 flights on Monday as Irma is expected to bring in strong crosswinds.
The airline says it’s now set its sights on resuming service to Florida airports, and has combined and consolidated fee waivers through Sept. 17.
Frontier: Frontier has canceled many flights into and out of Flrodia airports on Monday, as well as San Juan, Puerto Rico, as well as some flights on Tuesday. Check with the airline before you head to the airport.
The airline is also offering travel waivers to customers traveling to/from several cities including Atlanta and destinations in Florida, through Sept. 13.
“We strongly urge that you do not go to the airport unless you have already purchased a ticket, have a confirmed seat and checked that your flight status is showing on-time,” the airline says.
JetBlue: JetBlue is waiving fees and increase in fare for customers traveling through the Caribbean through Sept. 12, and in the Southeast region through Sept. 17.
Silver Airways: The airline has offered travel waivers through today. It’s a good idea to check with the airline before you head to the airport this week.
Southwest Airlines: There are travel waivers in place for customers flying into or out of several airports in the Southeast region including Atlanta, Birmingham, Charleston, and many Florida airports.
Spirit: In Florida, Spirit says it anticipates starting tarting operations in Fort Lauderdale (FLL) late in the day Sept. 12, pending airport conditions. All other flights are expected to start on Sept. 13.
At this time, the airline’s flights through Myrtle Beach are not expected to be impacted.
United Airlines: United flights to and from the Caribbean and southeastern U.S. have been affected by Irma, with travel waivers in place for certain cities. Check those here.

Best Buy Pulls Controversial Kaspersky Security Products
In the modern era, it’s always worthwhile to consider how to protect your systems from unwanted, malicious actors. Kaspersky Labs’ software has been a popular option for doing just that for close to two decades now — but after increasing scrutiny of their founder’s potential ties to the Kremlin, one major retailer has decided to stop selling their security suite.
Best Buy has decided this week to pull Kaspersky products from their real and virtual shelves for now, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Speaking with the ever-popular person “familiar with the decision,” the Star Tribune reports that although Best Buy has not conducted its own investigation into Kaspersky, the company felt there were too many “unanswered questions” about Kaspersky’s reliability to keep its product on the shelves.
Kaspersky has been offering its suite of antivirus and security products in the U.S. for nearly 20 years. They’re generally well-regarded, considered to be at least as good as the competition when it comes to features and price.
But there’s one big factor that’s become a big problem, in this strange 2017 we all inhabit: The company and its founder, Eugene Kaspersky, are Russian, and the company and its products have recently come under scrutiny as a result.
Since 2015, several reports have surfaced that Eugene Kaspersky has ties to Russian military intelligence. Any potential vulnerabilities related to using the software stemming from those ties were by and large minimized or ignored, though… until recently.
The Trump administration removed Kaspersky Lab from the list of approved vendors for government contracts back in July, citing increasing security concerns. Since then, federal, state, and local government agencies have been considering if or how to phase out their own usage.
In August, the FBI reportedly asked private sector corporations to consider phasing out Kaspersky products as well.
In a statement to the Star Tribune, Kaspersky reiterated its position that it’s been “caught in the middle of a geopolitical fight” and is being treated unfairly while Russia and the U.S. engage in a whole mess of posturing this year. The company also added that it has had a “good relationship” with Best Buy, and that the suspension may be reconsidered in the future.

Walmart Hopes Exclusive Toys Will Get You To Do Your Christmas Shopping There This Year
Walmart doesn’t want to share — hot holiday toys, that is. In a bid to undercut competitors and attract more shoppers this holiday season, the big box store is betting big on exclusive toy offers.
Walmart announced last week that part of its 2018 holiday sales strategy will hinge on being the only retailer to offer hundreds of toys that your child just might have an eye on.
Of the 1,000 new toys Walmart expects to display on shelves this holiday season, 300 will be exclusive to the retailer.
Some of these new and exclusive items are already gracing Walmart’s top toy list for the season. The company’s top 25 includes five items exclusive to the retailer.
Cutting Into Rivals
By making a portion of its toy offerings exclusive, Walmart is attempting to prevent customers from comparison shopping at rivals.
For instance, customers interested in Walmart’s Adventure Force Light Command Light-Up Motorized Blaster or Disney Frozen Sleigh toys won’t be able to find them cheaper on Amazon.
However, there are a few exceptions to this system. A savvy shopper predicting that one of Walmart’s exclusive toys will be a hot-ticket item could purchase extras and sell them on sites like eBay or even Amazon’s third-party marketplace.
Still, those items might go for significantly more than Walmart priced them to begin with.
Of course, exclusive offers aren’t, well, exclusive to Walmart: A number of retailers have offered specially curated, hard-to-find toy selections in the past.
CNBC notes that Kmart, Target, Toys-R-Us, and others have rolled out exclusive holiday toy offerings in the past.
“Top toys are evolving every day, and we’re continuing to find those great, new items and bringing them with speed to our customers,” Anne Marie Kehoe, vice president of toys at Walmart U.S., said in a statement.
Layaway
In another attempt to get customers through the door and spending a little earlier this year, Walmart will open its layaway program Sept. 1.
The program allows customers to select toys and other gifts, pay for them over time, and pick them up by Dec. 11 or when they are paid off.
While Walmart does not add any fees for the layaway service, each individual item in the order must be more than $10, and the total order must be more than $50.

Tesla Extended Range Of Cars So Customers Could Escape Hurricane Irma
As Hurricane Irma drew closer to Florida, many of those in the storm’s path just wanted to get as far away as possible. In an effort to help its customers put some distance between themselves and Irma, Tesla pushed out an update last week to its Model X and S electric vehicles, intended to squeeze more mileage out of a single charge.
Tesla confirmed to Electrek over the weekend that it provided customers in the path of Hurricane Irma with a free over-the-air update that provided certain Model S and Model X vehicles with an additional 30 to 40 miles per charge.
The update, which essentially unlocked the vehicles’ full battery capacity, came after one Tesla owner reached out to the company noting that he needed just 30 additional miles of range to make it out of a mandatory evacuation zone.
As a result, the company determined that adding range to vehicles would be beneficial to all owners, and temporarily provided the over-the-air update to all owners of Tesla’s 60D version vehicles in Florida. The upgrade will cease to operate on Sept. 16, Tesla says.
Saving Thousands
Tesla was able to provide the upgrade to owners partly due to the way in which the company sells its vehicles.
For instance, the company once sold the 60D version of its Model S and Model X cars. These versions were less expensive than others, but came with a 75 KWH battery that was capped to use only 80% of its power.
Drivers were given the option to unlock the remaining 20% of their battery’s power for an additional cost. According to Electrek, that cost could range between $4,500 and $9,000 depending on the vehicle and time of the upgrade.
Tesla has discontinued production of these versions, noting that most customers opt for longer range vehicles in the first place.
Changing The Brakes
Adding range to certain Tesla vehicles in Florida isn’t the only change the electric car company has made recently.
Our colleagues at Consumer Reports note that some recently manufactured Tesla vechiles have had their automatic electric braking (AEB) systems turned off.
A spokesperson for Tesla tells CR that the company turned off the system in all Model X, Model S, and Model 3 vehicles made since production of the new Model 3 began in July. The system was turned off in order to examine real-world data to ensure the AEB program works as extended.
According to a notice posted by a Tesla owner on Reddit, the company says the decision to disable AEB systems came after it updated some hardware in the newer vehicles.
A rep for the company confirmed this to CR, noting that the new vehicles had some minor hardware changes to the Autopilot system. As a result, the company is in the “process of robustly validating the new hardware using real-world driving data.”
“During that process, Automatic Emergency Braking will temporarily be inactive and will instead be in shadow mode, which means it will register how the feature would perform if it were activated, without taking any action. This temporary calibration period is standard Tesla protocol and is done out of an abundance of caution,” Tesla said.
Despite AEB operating in shadow mode, other features such as early collision warning and all Autopilot features remain functional.
The system is expected to be off-line for six weeks.
