Diono Recalls Nearly 520,000 Child Car Seats Over Concerns About Restraint Strength

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration announced today that Diono has recalled 519,052 child restraint and booster seats sold since 2014 because these seats may not restrain some children sufficiently in a crash.

What happened

During regular testing, the company found that the chest of a toddler-sized dummy and the head of a dummy the size of a 10-year-old moved an unacceptable amount. It cites production change and different tooling at the new factory as the reason for the difference. [PDF]

There have been no reported deaths, injuries, or other problems with the seats.

The six models included in this recall are:

• Radian R100
• Radian R120
• Radian RXT
• Olympia
• Pacifia
• Rainier

What to do

If you have these seats and have registered them with the company, Diono will contact you with revised instructions for the seat as well as sending a new chest clip and energy absorbing pad to be used when the seat is in front-facing mode.

In future, the seats will include the energy absorbing pad, and the seats still in production that are subject to the recall will have a maximum weight of 65 pounds in the future.

The seat should adequately restrain smaller children, and Diono says it believes that very few of these seats are being used for children weighing more than 65 pounds.

If you have questions about the seats or about the recall, contact Diono at 855-463-4666.

Equifax Takes Part Of Its Website Offline Over Concerns About Malware

Following a report that its consumer-facing website may have been serving up malware to visitors, Equifax — the credit bureau that seems intent on finding every way possible to ruin your day — has pulled some of its web pages offline.

Earlier today, a security researcher shared a recording he made of an Equifax web page redirecting him to malware masquerading as a Flash update.

Ars Technica dug into the details a bit and found enough evidence for “a strong case” that a third-party ad or anyalytics provider that was doing the redirecting.

“In that case, the breach, technically speaking, isn’t on the Equifax website and may be affecting other sites as well,” Ars notes. Still, it’s the latest in a long string of bad looks for Equifax.

And Equifax finally seems concerned, too, since in the hours after the first story ran and traveled the web it’s now taken down that page altogether. When we took the screenshot at the top of this post around 2:45 p.m., the page still read, “We’re sorry… The website is currently down for maintenance. We are working diligently to better serve you, and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We appreciate your patience during this time and ask that you check back with us soon.”

A representative for Equifax issued a statement saying, “We are aware of the situation identified on the equifax.com website in the credit report assistance link. Our IT and Security teams are looking into this matter, and out of an abundance of caution have temporarily taken this page offline. When it becomes available or we have more information to share, we will.”

Malware being served up on the official site is a different problem from the hundreds of fake lookalike scam sites out there pretending to be Equifax, of course; you should avoid those, too.

Exploding Sunroofs: Danger Overhead

Delta Passenger Blames Edible Marijuana For July Attack On Flight Attendant

A Florida man who was arrested after allegedly attacking a flight attendant on a flight in July — starting a brawl that injured two others — claims the incident was triggered by some edible marijuana he’d eaten before getting on the plane.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the passenger said he was fueled by drugs when he tried to exit the plane in mid-air and then turned on passengers and a flight attendant who were trying to subdue him.

“My understanding is that it was legal to buy and consume marijuana in the state,” he wrote in an affidavit. “After purchasing the edible marijuana, I ate it.”

He says that such behavior is totally unlike him, writing that he’s never had “a remotely similar incident in all my times of flying on an airplane.”

His friends and loved ones also submitted testimonials claiming that he’s not a violent person, but that he has a regular history of regular marijuana use. The man’s physician also chimed in, writing that eating marijuana can have adverse effects like “paranoia, confusion, hallucinations, and combativeness.”

A federal magistrate judge decided that was good enough to allow the man to leave jail while he awaits a February trial, where he will be facing four assault charges as well as a charge of interference with a flight crew.

However, while he can stay at his mother’s home in South Tampa until then, he’s not allowed to fly there from Seattle and will instead be required to travel by train, bus, or car.

MoviePass Needs More Movie Theater Pals To Keep Price Low

MoviePass, the startup that lets subscribers go to a movie a day, recently dropped its monthly rate to $10, resulting in a flood of sign-ups for the plan. While the slashed price might have drawn a lot more attention to MoviePass, it could also be an albatross around the company’s neck.

A MoviePass subscription used to cost as much as $50/month — too steep for folks who realized they would need to see at least four or five films each month just to make that work.

But thanks to funding from new investor, analytics firm Helios and Matheson, MoviePass cut that price to $10/month in August. That’s less than the usual cost of a single movie ticket in some markets, let alone the ability to see a film every day if you want. But it’s also likely not a tenable figure going forward.

Will MoviePass have to raise prices?

Two months after the price change, MoviePass is losing even more money faster than anticipated, prompting the data firm to invest even more money. In a note to shareholders, since it’s a publicly traded company, Helios and Matheson note that MoviePass may not be able to continue without price hikes or other sources of revenue.

“MoviePass currently spends more to retain a subscriber than the revenue derived from that subscriber and MoviePass currently does not have other sources of revenue,” a risk statement filed along with information about the firm’s new investment in MoviePass explains. “This results in a negative gross profit margin. MoviePass expects its negative gross profit margin to remain significant until MoviePass can generate other sources of revenues to offset the losses or achieve substantial economies of scale.”

“We underestimated the response”

The rollout of the new version of MoviePass was not planned well. It apparently took the country’s largest cinema chain, AMC, by surprise. In a press release, the company trashed the entire MoviePass business model and threatened legal action, saying that MoviePass in its current form “is not in the best interest of moviegoers, movie theatres, and movie studios.”

The company also had no idea how moviegoers nationwide would respond to the idea, having only sold subscriptions at a higher price point in a few large cities.

“We underestimated the response,” CEO Mitch Lowe told Forbes blogger Rob Cain (warning: video ad that auto-plays on that page) “My wildest dream was that we’d reach 150,000 subscribers in 15 months; we hit 150,000 in two days.”

Apart from its business model problems, MoviePass has also been slow to actually get the debit cards that they need into customers’ hands, which would be fine if new signups were limited using an official waiting list or required an invitation from an existing user. It doesn’t.

Will theater operators ever play ball?

Even before the price cut, MoviePass was not making money. Its current business model is to buy tickets at full price from theaters while charging users $10 per month. In the future, it hopes to sell ads and customers’ data to movie studios, and to cut deals with theaters to cut ticket prices, or share box office or concessions revenue.

That’s only if the company proves that it can bring more customers to theaters more often, spending on concessions and other extras. The largest discount that the company has been able to obtain from a theater operator is 20%, according to a document that investor Helios and Matheson has filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Airbnb Is Working On Its Own Branded Apartment Complex

What’s one surefire way to make sure you’re not annoying your neighbors with a constant stream of Airbnb guests? Live in an Airbnb-branded building, where all your neighbors are also renting out their apartments.

That’s the future the home-sharing company is dreaming of: Airbnb says it’s teamed up with Newgard Development Group to create a branded apartment complex with 324 units in Kissimmee, FL.

Dubbed “Niido Powered by Airbnb,” the concept could be a hit with hosts who want to travel — and use the money to fund those trips — or just anyone looking to for some help with the rent.

“As the cost of living increases, apartment renters are under intense financial pressure,” Harvey Hernandez, chief executive of Newgard said in a statement.

The company notes it also provides tourists with “unique listings that come with a set of amenities and conveniences specifically designed for travelers,” like keyless entry and shared common spaces, which are both handy to have when you’re sharing your home.

Residents have to sign annual leases, and will then be able to share either individual rooms or their entire units for up to 180 days per year. Anyone renting out their place will have access to a new Niido app that’s integrated with Airbnb. Not only will it support things like guest check-in, but it enables tenants to order up things like cleaning and linen service from a “MasterHost” on the property.

Anyone who chooses to share their homes will also be part of Airbnb’s Friendly Buildings Program, a revenue-sharing initiative aimed at helping landlords, tenants who rent out their homes on Airbnb, and their neighbors get along.

“This partnership shows how landlords, developers and Airbnb can work together to create value for everyone and better serve tenants,” said Jaja Jackson, Airbnb’s director of global multifamily housing partnerships.

There will be more to come, as the two companies say this is just the first of a chain of Niido buildings they’re panning for the southeastern U.S.

Tim Hortons Thinks Buffalo Sauce Is A Perfectly Natural Flavor For A Latte

If you find that your average cup of coffee doesn’t taste nearly enough like chicken wings, you may want to plan a trip to western New York, where Tim Hortons is unleashing one of the weirdest food combinations yet: a Buffalo sauce-flavored latte.

No, that is not a joke. The chain — now owned by Restaurant Brands International, parent company to Burger King and Popeyesannounced that it’s going to pay homage to both the chicken wing flavor and the city that spawned it by introducing a Buffalo Latte in two locations in Buffalo, NY.

Tim Hortons says the drinks will be made with espresso, steamed milk, and “a bold Buffalo sauce flavor,” all topped with whipped topping and “a dusting of zesty Buffalo seasoning.”

The chain acknowledges that this is an “unlikely pairing,” but that the combination of “sweet mocha and tangy Buffalo sauce come together to create an unexpectedly delicious sweet and spicy treat we hope our guests will enjoy.”

The Buffalo Latte starts at $2/79 and will be availabale at these Tim Hortons locations while supplies last (call ahead to confirm availability):
• 4849 Transit Road in Depew, NY
• 3470 Main St in Buffalo, NY

New Service Promises To Hold Your Digital Movies, Let You Watch Them On Multiple Apps

While there are plenty of places to buy movies and TV shows online, one minor problem is that you’re forever stuck having to watch that video on the platform where you purchased it, whether it’s Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, etc. But a newly revamped service claims to let you stash digital videos from various sources into one place.

The service is called Movies Anywhere, and was started by Disney back in 2014. You may have seen it marketed as Disney Movies Anywhere, which served as a digital locker for the studio’s movies and movies from franchises that it owns, like Marvel and Star Wars.

Today, Disney announced that it has signed on more studios to the service, which has now dropped the “Disney” and is called Movies Anywhere. Disney’s new movie-sharing buddies are Warner Bros., Universal, Sony Pictures, and Twentieth Century Fox, and other major studios could join later. Together, these give Movies Everywhere thousands of films.

The system is a decent replacement for the Ultraviolet multi-platform digital rights management that no one really liked. It lets customers access any Disney content they had purchased from various services. (Don’t confuse this with having streaming access to Disney content, which will be a separate subscription-based service.)

In practical terms, this means that you link your existing digital content accounts to the Movies Everywhere service, and it allows you to watch any of the disparate movies you’ve collected from any of your accounts, or from the Movies Anywhere app.

This is not earth-shattering. Really, it should have existed years ago for services outside of Disney.

“Are they providing a service consumers are clamoring for? No, not that I’ve seen,” one streaming media analyst told Ars Technica.

If you like to own movies, or if you want to ensure that your four-year-old has a copy of Moana to watch multiple times every day on whatever device you happen to have with you, this is a practical solution.

Movies Anywhere is offering free copies of some relatively recent releases, including Big Hero 6, Ghostbusters (2017), and The Lego Movie, to users who sign up and link two accounts.

Southwest Airlines Plans To Start Flying To Hawaii, Eventually

Southwest Airlines put on its best floral shirt to announce that the (sometimes) lower-cost carrier intends to start offering service to Hawaii. But when those flights to the far-flung island state will begin remains a question.

In its big announcement of the Hawaii news, Southwest would only say that it intends to start selling tickets for travel to Hawaii at some point in 2018.

First, Southwest needs to get what’s known as Extended Range (or ETOPS) approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. ETOPS is needed when you intend to fly an aircraft over an area — like, say, a vast ocean — where there aren’t any places to land safely in an emergency. While Southwest currently offers flights to as far away as Costa Rica, Hawaii would be the airline’s first transoceanic route.

“We wouldn’t be so bold as to say we’ll start flying in October or November or July of 2018 and not go through the FAA process,” Southwest Chief Revenue Officer Andrew Watterson told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. “We know we’ll get through the FAA process in time to sell tickets next year, but until the FAA gives us better indications of the authorization timeline, we’re not going to speculate and put a date out there.”

Equifax Website Reportedly Served Up Malware To Some Users

Every time we think Equifax can’t get any more incompetent than compromising the personal information for half the country’s adult population, it proves us wrong. In today’s installment of Equifax idiocy, it appears that the credit bureau’s website was recently hacked to serve up malware to some visitors.

Security analyst Randy Abrams discovered the flaw Wednesday evening, Ars Technica reports.

When trying to reach certain Equifax pages, Abrams said, his browser was redirected to a pop-up claiming to be a needed update for Adobe Flash.

While Flash is a garbage heap that does indeed always seem to need another security update, the pop-up dialog doesn’t actually lead to one. Instead, it installs unwanted adware that serves up (potentially scammy or malicious) advertisements on your computer.

Abrams sent Ars a video showing the Equifax page redirecting his browser several times until loading the fake Flash prompt:

He tells Ars that he was surprised to see the redirect pop up not once, not twice, but on several repeat visits. Ars also notes that very few antivirus suites correctly detect the file as unwanted adware, so if you are unfortunate enough to end up clicking to install, your security software may not even give you a warning.

That’s the bad news. Here’s the good: As of Thursday morning, Abrams tells Ars he can no longer reproduce the steps, so it’s possible that Equifax actually figured out what was wrong and fixed it.

Google Permanently Disables Home Mini’s Top Touch Panel After Device Recorded When It Shouldn’t Have

Following the news that Google’s new Home Mini connected-home hubs were recording users thousands of times per day because the device refused to stay asleep, Google has permanently disabled the touch-sensitive panel on the top of the Home Mini.

This touch functionality allowed users to activate the Home Mini without first having to say “OK Google” or “Hey Google,” and it also let the user manually pause or play audio streaming through the speaker.

But earlier this week, Google admitted that review units of the device had a problem where they were waking up on their own and recording whatever was going on in the room. The immediate fix was to disable the touch panel, and now that fix has been made permanent.

The company said that this issue only affected advance units that had been handed out for review at pre-launch events, and that it wouldn’t be a problem for customers who pre-ordered the Home Mini.

Now that’s a moot point, as Google announced in an update that it has decided to permanently disable the top touch panel by the end of the day Oct. 15.

“We made this decision to avoid any confusion and give you complete peace of mind while using your Mini,” the company’s support page for the issue reads.

Going forward, the only way you can wake up your Home Mini will be with your voice — either “Okay Google,” or “Hey Google.” You’ll also have to say a hot word and then pause, play, or stop instead of tapping the top of the device to control music, alarms, and timers.

Report Finds Auto Dealers May Be Charging Hispanic Customers More For Vehicle Add-Ons

If you’ve purchased a new car at a dealership, you’re probably familiar with the slew of possible options and add-ons for your vehicle — everything from tinted windows to extended service contracts. A new report claims that the price a customer is charged for these extras may be linked to their ethnicity.

The National Consumer Law Center today released a report [PDF], highlighting what dealers pay for auto add-on products and what they charge consumers.

It’s not a surprise that dealers mark up the prices on these products and services — they are, after all, trying to make a profit — but the report raises reasons to be concerned about the way that some dealers are passing these extra costs on.

The Markups

According to the report — based on analysis of a large national data set — dealers mark up add-on products by a far higher percentage than they mark up cars.

For example, one dealer sold over 1,000 window etching products — which cost the company $16 — for $189, representing a 1,081% markup.

When it came to Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP) insurance, the report found that 38 dealers had average markups of 300% or more, while 38 dealers marked up service contracts by an average of more than 300%.

In addition to finding the excessive rates of markups, the report also found that dealers were inconsistent in what they charged customers.

One dealer was found to pay either $35 or $65 for its window etching products. Of the 600 products sold to customers in 2012, NCLC found that 213 of the customers were charged $199, while others were charged between $1 and $1,995.

Possible Discrimination

NCLC suggests that the inconsistent pricing for add-on products leads to pricing discrimination.

“Discrimination on the basis of race, sex, or other protected characteristics may be an invidious side effect of dealers’ capricious pricing structures,” the report states, adding that giving manager the discretion to charge different customers different prices for the same products is a recipe for abuse.

In some cases, dealers may base pricing for add-ons not on the product’s quality or wholesale price, but by what they perceive the customer is willing to pay or will notice.

To make matters worse, because customers don’t know what others are paying for the add-ons, there is no way for them to detect whether they are being charged more than others for the same products.

When it comes to possible pricing discrimination by race, NCLC found that Hispanic customers were charged higher markups for service contracts than non-Hispanic customers.

Although the data used by NCLC did not provide customers’ race or gender, the organization used a name recognition methodology to determine these characteristics.

In all, the report examined service contracts issued from Sept. 2009 through June 2015 in 48 states and the District of Columbia.

The report found that the average markup percentage was higher for Hispanics than non-Hispanics in 44 states.

In 14 states the markup was significant for both in absolute pricing and percentage.

“These differences in markups are particularly troubling since they involve the retail prices of service contracts, which are not determined or affected by credit scores,” the report states. “Thus, they cannot be explained by differences in buyers’ credit scores.”

Financing Differences

While dealers were responsible for making up the prices of add-on products, the report found that companies providing financing also play a role in costs.

NCLC found that potential creditors give dealers conditions about what sort of transactions they will accept.

In some cases, creditors will allow higher markups for add-on products in order to obtain more business.

For instance in Ohio, NCLC found that Ally Bank financed just 10% of GAP insurance when the cost was $150 to $250. However, it financed 74% of these same deals where the customer price exceeded $900.

By financing higher loans for these add-on products, consumers, they are increasing the loan to value ration.

The higher loan to value results in more negative equity, which can hurt consumers because those who owe more than their car is worth will have a hard time trading it in or buying a new car.

Additionally, NCLC notes that higher loan to value rates have also been associated with higher default rates.

Can Things Change?

The NCLC report argues that the market for vehicle add-on products could be significantly more transparent, saying that dealers should be required to post the standard costs for these items — and that these posted prices should be non-negotiable, in order to prevent dealers from offering deals to some customers but not others.

The organization has also called on state and federal regulators to investigate possible discrimination in the pricing of add-on products and services.

Consumerist has reached out to the National Automobile Dealers Association for comment on the NCLC report and will update if we receive a response.
